William Boyd Horton Jr. passed from this life into eternity with his Savior on February 15, 2017 at the age of 76, at the Morristown-Hamblen Hospital after a brief illness.
Boyd enjoyed a 33 year career with the Dow Chemical Company, beginning in 1966 as a chemist and retiring in 1998 as a Lab Director. In retirement, he worked as Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 119, his grandson Jim's troop. He was a volunteer at the Sevier County Food Ministry, serving several years as Treasurer.
He was a member of First Baptist Church Gatlinburg where he was a Sunday School teacher and deacon, serving 3 years as Deacon Chairman. He was also an enthusiastic assistant each year at Vacation Bible School.
He was preceded in death by his parents W. Boyd Horton Sr. and Ethel Coleman Horton and his brother Milton Frank Horton.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha Wood Horton, his daughter Beth Skinner (James), and his son Bob Horton (Melanee). He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jim Skinner, Lauren Horton Batty (Chase), and Logan Horton (Erin) and a great granddaughter, Micah Elise Batty.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sevier County Food Ministry, P.O. Box 6042 Sevierville, TN 37864 or to the Mother's Day Out Program at First Baptist Gatlinburg, 111 Oglewood Lane, Gatlinburg, TN 37738.
The family will receive friends 3-5 PM Friday, February 17, with funeral service to follow at 5 PM at First Baptist Church, Gatlinburg with Rev. Larry Burcham officiating. A eulogy will be given by his son, Bob Horton. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
